Description

Jonathan Coe pertenece a esa superdotada generación literaria británica que forman autores como Amis, Barnes, McEwan, Ishiguro o Rushdie. Desde su consagración con la novela de 1994 ‘¡Menudo reparto!’ —descrita por Rodrigo Fresán como «una aproximación a los ambientes de Evelyn Waugh filmados por un Terry Gilliam en plena era Thatcher»—, Coe ha tratado de comprender su país a través de la sátira. Lo hace con un tono melancólico que en ocasiones se parece a la nostalgia, al tiempo que señala esta como uno de los males de la sociedad inglesa sobre la que escribe. Se trata, en realidad, de una mirada  al pasado más emparentada con dos de sus pasiones junto a la literatura: la música y el cine. Coe ha llegado a ejercer de músico profesional y ha colaborado en varios proyectos musicales. También ha escrito inolvidables personajes dedicados a la música: Benjamin Trotter en ‘El Círculo Cerrado’ o, más recientemente, Calista Frangopoulou en su última novela, ‘El señor Wilder y yo’. Este libro reúne sus tres grandes amores. Lo protagoniza un Billy Wilder de ficción basado en el cineasta, que fue su «primera influencia literaria». Esta herencia wilderiana podría explicar otra constante en la literatura de Coe: la sabia combinación de humor, oscuridad y dolor. Quizás por ello, uno de sus personajes dice en el ‘El corazón de Inglaterra’: «Todo aquello que realmente tiene gracia muestra siempre la verdad».
