En arteterapia el arte no se utiliza como herramienta de diagnóstico, sino como un medio para abordar dificultades emocionales, trastornos de comportamiento, discapacidades físicas o mentales, trastornos neurológicos o enfermedades físicas.
El arteterapia se realiza en sesiones de grupos reducidos o en sesiones individuales. Aunque las sesiones puedan ser placenteras en sí mismas, el arteterapia no es una actividad recreativa ni una forma de educación artística. Si bien el arteterapeuta tiene que poseer amplios conocimientos en artes visuales no es necesario que los usuarios de Arteterapia posean conocimientos artísticos alguno ni experiencia previa en arte para beneficiarse de esta forma de tratamiento.
